About the shukubo

Nichiren-shu Shugen-in Habanobo (Minobusan Kuonji sub-temple). 3493 Minobu, Minobu-cho, Minamikoma-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture.

Habanobo, literally meaning “the temple at the edge (hashi),”is located at the eastern edge of Minobusan. The word "hashi" also means "beginning" or "origin." The temple grounds, situated on a hill, offer excellent views, with Mt. Takatori directly in front and Mt. Shichimen visible, a unique feature among the shukubo on the mountain. It is a quiet environment, just a 5-minute walk to Kuonji.

Based on the concept of "sanro-rashiku" (viewing time spent at the shukubo as a form of training), there are no luxury items such as televisions in the rooms or even the lobby. During the evening service, which guests participate in, there is a time for O-kaicho (opening of the altar) and a Dharma talk. Meals are shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), with no animal products used even in the broth. The chief priest will guide guests to the morning service held early in the morning at the head temple Kuonji.

History of the Temple

Habanobo is a temple founded byShijo Kingo Yorimoto,a samurai from the Kamakura period and also the personal physician to Saint Nichiren. It began in 1280 (Koan 3) when he built a hermitage to serve Saint Nichiren closely, making itone of the oldest and most historic sub-temples among the current Minobusan branch temples. In 1874 (Meiji 7), it merged with Shinjobo, and although it suffered a fire in 1877 (Meiji 10), it was rebuilt in the same year. The current main hall (Shijo-den) and other structures were rebuilt in 1990 (Heisei 2).

The hall enshrines Saint Nichiren, the principal image of Shichimen Daimyojin, and the couple Shijo Kingo Yorimoto. As Yorimoto was a physician,it is believed to have the merit of healing illnesses. The main gate is also a Yakuimon, a style often used in the homes of physicians in the past. While many temples on Minobusan have undergone relocation and merger repeatedly, this temple has no record of relocation and has maintained its ancient location, passing down the Dharma light for 50 generations to this day.

Yorimoto was one of Saint Nichiren's four great patrons. During the Tatsunokuchi Persecution, he showed his resolve to die with Saint Nichiren, and it is said that he personally crossed the sea to visit Saint Nichiren during his exile to Sado. He was also skilled in medicine, and Saint Nichiren trusted him so much that he said, "I entrust everything concerning my body to you and will not use any other medicine."
