Temple Hotel Shodenji

About the shukubo
Matsuryuzan Shodenji (commonly known as "Shodenji"・Nichiren sect). 1-12-12 Shiba, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
Shodenji renovated its kuri (temple kitchen and living quarters) adjacent to the main hall within the temple grounds as accommodation, opening it to general guests as a shukubo (temple lodging) in July 2019. The temple's wish to "open the temple to more people and encourage them to visit" has begun in the form of a shukubo.
History of the Temple
Shodenji was an hermitage where the 107th Emperor spent his later years, established in 1602. Later, this hermitage became the Edo branch office of the Nichiren sect, a major sect among Japan's thirteen Buddhist denominations, and was formally established as a temple under its current name, "Matsuryuzan Shodenji."
The guardian deity of Shodenji is Bishamontenno. Bishamontenno is one of the "Four Heavenly Kings," said to be the strongest among the gods who protect Buddhism. Although originally an Indian deity, Bishamontenno became so popular among common people that he is one of the "Seven Gods of Fortune," a unique Japanese belief, and was enshrined as a god offering many blessings.
Edo Meisho Zue

"Edo Meisho Zue," which depicted famous places and the daily lives of common people in Edo during the 1830s, also records the bustling atmosphere of Shodenji at the time. The illustrations show common people visiting Shodenji on "Tiger Days" (Tora no Hi), old calendar days believed to bring good fortune. Even today at Shodenji, the Bishamondo holds a special opening and prayers on the "First Tiger Day" of January, May, and September.
Goshuin

Shodenji's goshuin (temple seal stamp) depicts Bishamonten. Here at Shodenji, one of the Nichiren sect's historically significant statues of Bishamontenno was gifted by a high-ranking priest of the same sect. For this reason, Shodenji was counted as one of the "Three Great Bishamon of Edo" and gathered the faith of many common people.
Bishamontenno was deeply revered as the "God of Victory" by warlords who made their names during the Sengoku period. After the Sengoku period ended and the Edo period began, he came to be worshipped as a god of fortune who improves business prosperity, financial luck, and wealth.
Guardian Beasts

The guardian beasts protecting the Bishamondo are "tigers" (tora). This is an unusual combination, as komainu are typical.
Blessings of Bishamonten— Business prosperity / Improvement of financial luck and wealth / Lasting military fortune, victory, and good luck / Warding off evil and inviting good fortune
